Looking after your voice

Gospel music is great fun to sing but the choir parts can often be loud and high. How do we look after our voices?

Rule #1: Stay relaxed - when we tighten our throat and force the sound out it can strain our vocal cords. When we yawn we relax. Aim for that open 'yawning' feel when singing.

Rule #2: always warm up - don't jump into high or loud singing without properly warming up. Start with humming, then low scales on vowel sounds ('ah' is particularly good to help open out and relax). 'Hah' can help get us breathing from the diaphragm. Gradually work up to higher notes.

Rule#3: good posture - shoulders, neck and jaw relaxed, level head, feet slightly apart.

Rule #4: drink lots - have lots of water when singing. Using Vocalzone throat pastilles can also help keep your vocal cords lubricated. (You can keep one in your cheek while singing.)

Rule#5: don't sing when you're ill - if you have a bad throat then don't push yourself to sing as you can damage your voice.
